Leaking Oil Isn’t Normal: When a Valve Cover Gasket Needs Replacing

Posted August 30, 2026 1:35 PM

Let’s say you discover a little oil leak in your vehicle and you think, “It’s small.  It’s no big deal.”  Remember that no oil leak is ever normal, and it might be a sign that your valve cover gasket is failing.

That gasket is what seals the top of your engine.  It keeps oil inside while your engine is running.  After it’s been doing that for a long time, guess what? That gasket gets old, and the engine heat starts to take its toll.  It gets brittle, might crack or even shrink, and when that happens, its seal breaks and your engine oil can start to leak out.

You might notice a failing valve cover gasket by smelling it rather than seeing it.   It’s the odor of burning oil leaking onto the hot parts of your engine, like the engine manifold.  The acrid smell of burning oil is not subtle, plus you may even see visible signs of smoke coming from under the hood.

You may spot oil spots on your driveway.  Your engine might start to misfire if oil starts to get into the spark plug wells.  Then you will probably notice the engine misfiring and, eventually, your Check Engine light might come on.

These are signs you don’t want to ignore, because if you don’t take care of that valve cover gasket leak in a timely manner, it can lead to bigger—and more expensive—problems. If your engine’s other parts aren’t getting lubricated enough, friction between moving metal parts can cause significant wear and might lead to overheating.

The leaking oil can get all over your engine’s wiring and rubber hoses.  Sometimes that leaking oil can catch fire in your engine, too.  It can eventually lead to much more expensive repairs.

If you notice oil leaks or the smell of burning oil, make sure you have one of our technicians look at it as soon as you can.  The earlier you get your vehicle in for service, the more likely the valve cover gasket can be replaced efficiently, without complications and save you money in the long run.

Smooth Operator (Shock Absorbers)

Posted August 23, 2026 1:18 PM

When you are comfortably headed down the road, you may not realize how many of the imperfections in the driving surface are being smoothed out, so you hardly feel most of them.  You can thank your shock absorbers for a lot of that comfort, and it’s important to make sure you keep your shocks in good shape.

Newer vehicles have shock absorbers in the back wheels with another shock absorbing assembly in the front which may also have a spring component as well, called struts.

Shock absorbers not only keep your vehicle traveling smoothly and comfortably, but they also contribute to its stability.  Increased stability will help you be able to handle sharp turns and sudden stops more easily.  Shocks also prolong the life of your tires because they’ll grip the road more tightly.  And a nice side benefit of that is your tires should last longer.

After months hitting a lot of bumps on uneven road surfaces, eventually your shock absorbers will start to wear.  You may notice your vehicle begin to sway more when you go around a corner, and it might be more difficult to steer.  Your tires can start to wear unevenly, and the tread may show signs of cupping (flat spots).

Other signs your shocks could need replacing is when you hit a hard bump in the road and your vehicle continues bouncing more than you remember.  Your shocks may have suffered extreme damage that can causes fluid inside to leak.

If you notice any of these signs, head on over so we can check things out.  We also recommend you have your shocks regularly inspected so you can take care of problems before you start feeling some of those symptoms of wear.  Your vehicle’s manufacturer usually will include recommendations in your owner’s manual on how frequently you should have shocks inspected.

Growing Old Together (Maintaining an Older Vehicle)

Posted August 16, 2026 1:12 PM

More and more of us are hanging on to our vehicles longer.  A company by the name of HIS Markit recently released a report that shows the average age of light vehicles in the U.S. is now 11.8 years.  Light vehicles are cars, SUVs (sport utility vehicles) and CUVs (compact utility vehicles).

In Canada, the average life expectancy of a vehicle there is around 13 years, and in the U.S., it's around 15.  Vehicles are lasting longer these days, and there are several reasons for that.

One expert cites better technology and overall quality improvements.  While in past years, vehicles were made mainly of heavier steel components, more modern vehicles contain lighter magnesium and aluminum alloys, high-strength steel, polymers and carbon fiber.  They last longer and reduce the overall vehicle weight, and that can contribute to better fuel economy.

Modern internal combustion engine designs have been improved, and since they use more computers, they are more efficient with better performance.  Those factors also contribute to a longer-lasting powertrain.  In fact, it's not unusual to see a powertrain easily last 150,000 miles/250,000 kilometers or more with no major failures.

Drivers are also taking their vehicles in more regularly for periodic maintenance.  Choosing one service facility for all your maintenance can contribute to your vehicle's longevity, too, since technicians know your vehicle's repair and service history.

If you bought your vehicle taking out a 5-year loan and you keep it 11 years, you've managed 6 of those years without a payment, always a nice feeling.  Plus, a bonus is that you get very familiar with every aspect of that vehicle's sounds, smells, handling, stopping characteristics, visibility and limitations.  And the more familiar you are with your vehicle, the more confident you can be as a driver.

No Charge (Why Won’t My Battery Hold a Charge?)

Posted August 9, 2026 12:59 PM

When your vehicle’s battery is dead, it leaves you with that horrible, helpless feeling.  A dead battery means it won’t hold a charge, and there are several reasons it won’t.

One is age.  Batteries have chemical and electrical systems in them that create power, and as time goes by, they won’t work well anymore.  They may have been degraded by exposure to extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. Batteries have a code on them that can tell you when they were manufactured.

Another reason your battery won’t hold a charge is corrosion on the terminals, the metal posts where your battery cables are connected.  A chemical reaction between the battery’s acid and air creates a salty moisture that can corrode those terminals.

If your vehicle’s alternator is not working properly, it won’t charge your battery as it is designed to, and the battery may lose its charge more quickly than it should. Another possibility is there might be an electrical component that’s staying on when you turn your vehicle off, and it may slowly drain the battery so much that there won’t be enough power to start your vehicle.

When you notice any of these things, bring your vehicle in so a technician can evaluate what’s causing the problems.  We will give your electrical system a thorough inspection and run tests that can tell the health of the battery and other components.  You may be able to avoid problems by having us evaluate your electrical system regularly as part of a periodic maintenance schedule.

Don't Neglect Your Spare (Spare Tire Care)

Posted August 2, 2026 12:56 PM

If you've ever had a flat tire, then you know welcome it is to have a spare tire that is properly inflated, in good shape and easy to get to.  Problem is many of us don't even give our spare tire (if we even have one) a second thought.

If you have an SUV or truck with a spare, it may be mounted outside the vehicle, such as on the tailgate or underneath the vehicle.  All of them, especially those underneath, take the brunt of debris, moisture, salt and dirt from the road surface, a potpourri of corrosion potential.  The hardware that holds these on can rust into a solid mess, making it hard for you or even a roadside assistance service to get off.

If you have one of those, have it checked and maintained at your vehicle repair facility on a regular basis.  They should be lubricated and cleaned periodically, and some recommend doing this service every time you have your tires rotated.  If the spare is the same size as the tires on the vehicle, it may be a good idea to have it rotated with the others.

Some vehicles have compact spares that are in a small well in the trunk or some other spot. Most drivers don't pay any attention to them.  Over time, air leaks out of those spares, leaving them flat when you most need them.  When you have your vehicle in for service or routine maintenance, ask your service advisor for his or her advice on making sure the spare is inflated properly and cleaned, usually at least twice a year.

You may not know it, but your vehicle may not have any spare at all.  Instead, it may have an inflator kit that you are supposed to use to inflate and seal a flat tire.  That sealant has a limited life span and should be replaced every few years.  Check with your service advisor to make sure the kit is up to date and will do the job when called upon.

Manufacturers know a flat tire's always a possibility.  No matter what contingency solution they've included with your vehicle, keep it in shape and in good working order.  When you need it, you'll be very glad you did.

D’Auria’s in Cherry Hill has been my go-to for car services for over half a decade, and I cannot speak highly enough about this shop. Whether I am there for simply an oil change, or a weird noise from under the hood, or more major repairs and system services, Joe and Chris have been consistently honest, fair and fast with very reasonable pricing and work that I can truly trust to keep me safe on the road for the thousands of miles I seem to rack up month to month. They are always willing to take a look at things when I roll in unannounced with a squeaky something, always let me know the urgency and cost upfront, and always explain everything to me thoroughly and completely so I am fully informed and able to learn about my car and all its quirks along the way. If you’re looking for a team that genuinely cares about you as a customer and respects your time and safety, D’Auria’s is it. (Thanks for being so awesome, y’all!! My lil blue car and I appreciate you very much!)
